Xbox Opens Disc-to-Digital Licensing to Everyone

Xbox has made its disc-to-digital feature available globally, allowing all users to convert supported physical discs into digital licenses. The system works with most Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, and Play Anywhere titles can be accessed on PC and handheld devices. However, original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are excluded, and selling or losing a disc may revoke the digital entitlement.
The feature is no longer limited to testers; Microsoft says any player can use it worldwide. Supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs can create digital entitlements usable on other Xbox hardware. Play Anywhere titles extend that access to PC and handhelds, such as a ROG Ally Xbox X.
Original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs remain unsupported. Microsoft cautions that which discs qualify can change because of technical, legal, publishing, production, or other considerations. If a disc is sold, lost, or given away, the digital license may be revoked. For bulk use, disabling automatic disc playback is advised.
This change may simplify access for Xbox owners who keep physical discs, letting them play across consoles, PCs, and handhelds without repurchasing. It could also affect second-hand game sales, because reselling a disc might remove the linked digital copy, potentially reducing value for buyers and sellers. Preservation advocates may welcome broader digital access, though exclusions for older discs and shifting eligibility could limit benefits.
