Valve revamps Steam's Discount & Events section for personalized discovery

Valve is replacing Steam's manually curated, calendar-based Discount & Events placements with a dynamic, personalized system intended to improve discoverability. The company says the change lets it show ten times as many games daily and has already produced gains in store visits, wishlists, and cart additions. The full rollout is planned for early 2027, and developers will receive updated tools for managing discounts and sale events.
Valve is replacing Steam’s Discount & Events placements, now scheduled manually by partners or Valve staff, with a personalized dynamic system. Valve says this has let it surface ten times as many games each day, producing more store-page traffic, wishlist saves, and cart adds. The company plans to complete the rollout in early 2027 and provide revised tools for managing promotions and sales.
Hooded Horse CEO Tim Bender observed that the section, once dominated by top sellers, now features smaller indie titles with review counts ranging from below one hundred to a few thousand. Some previously overlooked games went from nearly no visits to several thousand, while traffic changes for larger titles were milder.
If the personalized system works as described, players may encounter a broader mix of games, while smaller developers could gain visibility previously reserved for established hits. That may shift discovery power further toward algorithmic curation, affecting how studios plan promotions and how consumers find titles. However, outcomes depend on recommendation quality, transparency, and whether increased exposure translates into sustainable sales rather than brief attention spikes.
