English Fan Translation Released for Pokémon Origin HeartGold

A popular Chinese ROM hack, Pokémon Origin HeartGold, now has an English translation created by Reddit user kakapipi. The hack offers a new story with anime, manga, and Pokémon Origins influences, plus three playable protagonist styles and post-game content. The translation was made with AI assistance and is still in bug-testing, with the creator seeking testers.
Pokémon Origin HeartGold is a DS ROM hack with a large following in China. Alex maintains its current version, while 雁南飞TB is credited as the original creator. Players can pick protagonist styles based on anime Ash, the Pokémon Special manga, or Origins Red, and the game offers three full runs plus post-story content.
Base stats and move learning were reworked, as were difficulty settings and convenience features. The English patch used AI assistance, and AI-generated code helped edit and analyze the original hack. Because kakapipi does not speak Mandarin, testing is manual and ongoing; testers and bug reports are sought.
This translation could give English-speaking Pokémon fans access to a well-regarded Chinese fan project, potentially widening appreciation for non-Western ROM hacks. It may also encourage more fan translators to use AI-assisted workflows, while raising questions about accuracy and credit. The call for testers could strengthen community collaboration, and the original creators might gain greater international visibility.
