BillyTime!Games has launched the third major update for its Ghostbusters ROM hack on Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. The release introduces animated versions of the four Ghostbusters inspired by The Real Ghostbusters, along with Kylie Griffin, Crash Test Dummy, new cheat codes, costume colors, a mini-game, and difficulty-based rewards. It can be downloaded for free from ROM Hack Plaza.

Expanded Detail

The original 1990 Ghostbusters for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive was made by Sega and Compile. It used a fresh plot and stylized, super-deformed versions of Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Egon Spengler, while leaving Winston Zeddemore out. BillyTime!Games later added Winston through Ghostbusters: Special Edition, then expanded that project with Janine Melnitz and Louis Tully.

Version 3.0 is described as the hack's biggest upgrade yet. Alongside the animated Real Ghostbusters cast, it adds Kylie Griffin, Crash Test Dummy, costume colors, a mini-game, and difficulty rewards. The developer has warned that hidden bank-switching content may cause issues on some emulators or flash carts, though the game remains playable.

Context

This update could strengthen interest in retro gaming and fan-driven preservation, especially among Sega Genesis/Mega Drive owners, emulator users, and fans of Ghostbusters cartoons. By adding characters and secrets, it may encourage community discussion, replay, and further ROM-hacking experiments. Compatibility caveats on some emulators or flash carts might limit access for certain players, while free availability could make the project more visible. Overall, its impact may remain niche but meaningful within gaming fandom.
