Sony brings AI upscaling technology to standard PS5 console

Sony has launched Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI upscaling technology for the base PlayStation 5 developed in collaboration with AMD. The technology uses a streamlined neural network architecture to enhance image quality and improve frame rates while remaining distinct from the more advanced PSSR system exclusive to the PS5 Pro. Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei will be the first titles to implement the new upscaling on standard PS5 hardware.
Sony has partnered with AMD to bring machine learning-based image enhancement to its standard console model, roughly two years after the PS5 Pro's launch. The new system uses a lighter computational approach than the premium version, relying on reduced-precision mathematics and optimized instruction sets rather than dedicated hardware. While developers can adapt existing PS5 Pro implementations relatively quickly, some adjustments to game settings and asset streaming may be necessary for optimal results.
The technology addresses a long-standing gap between standard and premium console capabilities. Both Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions—major PlayStation studios—have committed to supporting the feature in their upcoming flagship titles, suggesting broader industry adoption may follow. This move could extend the technical relevance of base PS5 hardware for the latter half of the console's lifecycle.
The introduction of AI upscaling to standard hardware may reduce the performance gap between console tiers, potentially affecting purchase decisions for consumers weighing base and Pro models. Game developers could see more flexibility in balancing visual quality and performance across the installed base. However, the effectiveness of QSSR relative to PSSR may influence player expectations and perception of value—those seeking cutting-edge visuals might still view the Pro as necessary, while others may find the standard console's capabilities increasingly sufficient.
