Ubisoft's Cancelled Zelda Spinoff Would Have Cast Ganondorf as Lead
A former Ubisoft developer revealed that the studio was working on a Legend of Zelda spinoff starring Ganondorf, under the codename Goliath. Nintendo had approved the concept but asked for Ganondorf as the protagonist. The project was ultimately cancelled.
The project originated from Ubisoft Milan, the studio behind the successful Mario + Rabbids crossover titles, which helped pave the way for Nintendo to approve the pitch. Originally conceived with a new protagonist, Nintendo specifically requested Ganondorf take the lead role, and development proceeded under the codename Goliath to reflect its ambitious scope. The prototype was ultimately rejected in late 2023, and after discussions about other Nintendo properties stalled, the team disbanded. Several developers subsequently founded Day 4 Night studio, where their current project, Bradley the Badger, reportedly carries forward some of the experimental and fourth-wall-breaking concepts that would have defined the cancelled Zelda spinoff.
This story may resonate with Zelda fans who have long speculated about playing from the antagonist's perspective, potentially influencing how Nintendo approaches future spinoffs or character-driven entries. It also highlights the fragility of creative partnerships between major publishers, showing how even approved, well-funded projects can collapse during development. For the broader gaming industry, the revelation may spark renewed discussion about the value of villain-led narratives and how risk-averse major franchises can be when protecting established IP.
