Epic Games Files New 'Megaverse' Trademark Despite Prior Loss

Epic Games has filed a new trademark application for the term “Megaverse” after an earlier European dispute with Megaverse Ltd. That prior opposition narrowed Epic’s existing “Epic Games Megaverse” registration to classes 35 and 45. The new filing covers classes 09, 38, 41, and 42, and could lead to another legal challenge because Megaverse Ltd.’s mark is still active.
Epic Games has submitted a fresh application for the word “Megaverse,” even though it previously lost a European clash over a similar mark. That earlier opposition, brought by Megaverse Ltd., reduced Epic’s “Epic Games Megaverse” registration to classes 35 and 45.
The new request seeks protection in classes 09, 38, 41, and 42. Because Megaverse Ltd.’s own mark remains active, the filing may trigger another challenge. Epic previously paid £700 in official costs; its older U.S. registration remains on the USPTO.
If Epic’s filing faces another opposition, the outcome could affect game developers, platform operators, and consumers who encounter metaverse-related branding. A successful challenge might narrow Epic’s ability to use “Megaverse” in software, communications, entertainment, and technology services, potentially influencing how companies choose and clear marks. It may also add legal costs and uncertainty for smaller rights holders, while reminding the industry that broad trademark claims can collide with existing registrations.
