Lanterns Episode 7: Hal's Vault, Antaan, and Sinestro's Arrival
In the penultimate episode of HBO's Lanterns, John Stewart uses Hal Jordan's ring to create a digital copy of Hal's consciousness. The Hal-ogram opens a vault in Rushville, revealing supplies and a portal-making black sphere. The episode also explores how Sinestro reached Antaan's planet and deepens the mystery of Hal's death.
In the seventh episode, John Stewart retrieves Hal Jordan’s ring from the grave so a 2006 consciousness backup can manifest. This digital Hal agrees to unlock a Rushville storage vault only after meeting Kerry. The vault holds a packed bag, a handgun, a canteen, and a black sphere capable of opening portals.
A 1975 flashback shows young Hal punished after a baseball dispute; his father Martin fights the coach and gives him a key. Later, Hal explains Martin gave it months before his suicide, and that the safe contained money, coins, photos, and a note. Hal’s grandfather also died by suicide, making the “legacy” an inherited pain.
The episode’s focus on suicide, inherited pain, and family secrets could affect viewers who have experienced similar loss, potentially prompting reflection or conversations about mental health. Fans of superhero adaptations may also discuss how the series blends cosmic mystery with grounded grief. Because Lanterns is a high-profile HBO show, its handling of these themes may shape broader criticism and audience expectations for genre television, though reactions will vary.
