Solara One Adds a Holodeck-Style Forest Experience on Quest

Solo developer Aaron Cryderman released the Arboretum update for Solara One in early September. The update introduces a Holodeck-inspired area with Quest and Explore modes, set in a forest featuring a Buddha statue, glowing crystals, and ambient music. Cryderman was motivated by thoughts about how people living in space might miss Earth-like environments, with Star Trek's Holodeck serving as an influence.
Aaron Cryderman built Solara One alone after leaving a data-focused career at BlackBerry. He combined interests in digital music, photography, meditation, and space art, taught himself Unity, and launched the Meta Quest app in May 2024. Subsequent updates added content plus visual and performance improvements.
The Arboretum arrived in early September. It begins in a grid-lined space where users pick a gamified Quest mode or free-play Explore mode before entering a forest with a Buddha statue, glowing crystals, and ambient music. Cryderman drew inspiration from Star Trek's Holodeck and thoughts about future space dwellers missing Earth-like settings.
This update may broaden VR's appeal beyond action-focused gamers by offering calm, meditative environments. Quest owners interested in relaxation, mindfulness, or space-themed experiences could benefit, while solo developers may see that passion projects can grow through incremental updates. If such experiences ease stress or provide virtual escapes, they might subtly shape how people use mixed reality for emotional restoration, though its reach may remain niche and depend on headset comfort and access.
