LEGO Racers Fan Remake Adds Online Play, New Tracks, And Cut Content

A fan recreation of LEGO Racers titled Step On It: LEGO Racers has been released on itch.io for PC, mobile, and browser. It uses a new engine and adds online multiplayer, four-player split-screen, tracks ported from a LEGOLAND Windsor arcade game, and restored shortcuts. Creator Navigator Sharp said the project was enabled by isledecomp's decompilation work and aimed to recover content left out of the original.
The project, Step On It: LEGO Racers, appeared on itch.io and supports Windows, Linux, Mac, Android, and browser play. It rebuilds the racer in a fresh engine and adds online multiplayer, four-player split-screen, courses adapted from a LEGOLAND Windsor arcade title, and previously removed shortcuts.
Creator Navigator Sharp credited isledecomp’s decompilation effort as enabling the work and said the goal was recovering content absent from the original. The 1999 title was developed by High Voltage Software with LEGO Media and later spawned a 2001 sequel.
This release could strengthen interest in game preservation and fan-led remakes, especially among players who grew up with LEGO Racers and those curious about decompilation projects. It may also draw attention to how rights holders respond to unofficial works, affecting fan creators and communities that rely on shared tools and documentation. Its accessibility across PC, mobile, and browser could widen the audience, while legal uncertainty may shape whether similar projects are attempted or sustained.
